President Donald Trump Announces New Military Transgender Policy

|| PJ Media

“Early Wednesday morning President Trump announced a new policy banning transgender people from serving in the military.

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump tweeted. “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and distruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

his policy is a fantastic rejection of the military policy under President Barack Obama, who repealed the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy about homosexual service members. Under Obama, the military arguably became a “progressive” social experiment.

Obama also decided to let transgender soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines serve openly. RAND Corp., which helped the Defense Department study the issue, estimated there are 2,500 transgender service members currently on active duty and 1,500 in the reserves.

In June, Defense Secretary James Mattis approved a recommendation by the service chiefs to delay the acceptance of transgender applicants into the military until Jan. 1, 2018.

Trump’s action also followed a Congressional move this month to preserve gender reassignment treatment for transgender people. On July 14, 24 Republicans joined House Democrats to block an amendment that would have eliminated transgender services to members of the military.

Perhaps the most notorious example of transgender soldiers is former intelligence analyst Brad Manning, who goes by “Chelsea.” Manning was convicted for espionage, and came out as transgender while in prison. Trump tweeted that she was a “TRAITOR,” but Obama commuted Manning’s sentence in the final days of his term.

rump will face a great deal of criticism for this decision, but he deserves praise for putting the military’s capacity to achieve victory ahead of “progressive” social programs.

The move may seem a bit of a surprise from Trump, who sided with transgender people on the bathroom issue last year. While he has signed an executive order championing religious freedom, Trump has proven a moderate on social issues, reportedly influenced in the other direction by his daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner.

Expect angry LGBT advocates, happy social conservatives, and a robust debate going forward.”

Combat Veteran: War Is No Place For The Gender Confused

|| Daily Caller

“Combat veteran J.R. Salzman said Wednesday morning in the wake of President Donald Trump’s military transgender ban that a war theater is no place for the gender confused.

In a tweet series, Salzman recounted his experiences in Iraq in 2006, when he was stationed at an isolated firebase in the blazing heat and experienced constant stress from the intense nature of his job.

“Everyday was Groundhog Day,” Salzman tweeted. “Wake up and do the same patrols, the same shifts, every single day. It was so damn hot. 150° in the gun trucks.”

“The stress of being out there and doing the same job every single day eats away at you,” Salzman said. “The younger guys had problems with that overtime.”

“After stepping on each other’s nuts living in the same can for five months, guys were at each other’s throats,” Salzman added. “The stress made it worse.”

For Salzman, the intensity of the war theater is so great that many of the men who were not even suffering from mental issues often snapped, particularly the younger troops. Due to servicemembers being in such close quarters with each other, “any tiny little personal issue they had suddenly became a mountain.” Salzman further pointed out that introducing servicemembers to the team who are “mentally, emotionally, or physically confused or in turmoil” will inevitably lead to people getting killed.

Transgenders in that environment are a “ticking time bomb.”

“Political correctness has absolutely no place in the military,” he said.

Trump announced Wednesday that he would not “accept or allow” transgenders serving openly in the military, citing medical costs and general disruption. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday afternoon that the details of the ban still need to be worked out between the White House and Pentagon, with the Pentagon taking a leading role. She also noted that after Trump made his decision on the ban Tuesday, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and other members of Trump’s national security team were immediately informed. However, many other Pentagon officials were left totally in the dark until Trump delivered the news on Wednesday morning.”

What did service members think of the Obama-era transgender military policy?

|| Washington Examiner

“Debate is raging on social media about President Trump’s decision on Wednesday to reverse an Obama-era policy and ban transgender individuals from serving openly in the military, but how did service members perceive the policy in the first place?

A Military Times/Institute for Veterans and Military Families poll of 1,664 active-duty troops conducted on a voluntary and confidential basis as President Barack Obama’s term was coming to an end last December found significantly more respondents believed it to be hurtful than helpful.

More specifically, when asked how the policy allowing transgender individuals to serve openly “affected military readiness,” 41 percent said it “hurt” while 12 just percent said it “helped.”

Then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the change to allow transgender soldiers last summer, roughly six months before the poll was taken, saying in a Defense Department press release, “This is the right thing to do for our people and for the force.”
